Push to make allergen labelling clearer

Now there’s a push for tougher rules about how products are labelled after a choc chip cookie killed a child.

Isabel Marrero was 9-years-old when she died from an anaphylactic reaction in March this year, after she ate what looked like her favourite biscuit.  Her mother didn’t realise that she had purchased a different product, as this biscuit packaging – bar one word –  looked the same as the one she’d been buying for years.

“We learn from every death and we should be learning from what happened to Isabel,” Maria Said, CEO of Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia said.  “… make allergen declarations clearer so that consumers can have greater confidence in getting the information they need to make informed and safe food choices.”

The Food Standards Code require businesses to declare allergens on product labels – but it doesn’t say how or where. And there are no requirements to inform customers if they alter the product.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) told ten daily they’re now working on a proposal to change the law.

Australia is the allergy capital of the world — 1 in 20 Aussie kids has a food allergy.

There has been a 10 percent increase in allergy fatalities between 2007 to 2013.

Strawberry recall – fears for our farmers and strawberry industry

Fears for our strawberry farmers and the strawberry industry emerge as strawberries are recalled from supermarket shelves around Australia after being found to contain needles.

  • More cases emerge after nine-year-old boy bites into strawberry with needle in it at school, Queensland mother says
  • Two brands recalled were sold in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria
  • Growers say fear could devastate strawberry industry if people stopped buying the fruit

In 2006 food laws were introduced making it compulsory for a company to report suspected cases of food tampering.  In Queensland, someone found guilty of deliberately contaminating food to cause public alarm or anxiety faces a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment.  This penalty can also be applied if the person interferes with food to cause members of the public to refrain from purchasing those goods.

Changes to aged care food and drink framework on its way!

With Australia’s aging population projected to more than double by 2057, food and drink for older individuals is an area in need of attention.  Changes to aged care food and drink framework on its way.

An article posted by Dr Julie Chicero on 05/09/18 explains that about 40-60 per cent of people in aged care have trouble with chewing and swallowing to the point where they are at risk of choking on food.  Research by Monash University has found that choking on food is the second highest cause of preventable death in aged care.

Texture modified foods and thick drinks are used to minimise risks associated with choking and the development of life-threatening pneumonia.  On 1 May 2019 Australia will join many other countries around the world in transitioning to a new international standardised terminology for these speciality texture modified foods and drinks – the IDDSI Framework (  Click here to read the full article.

Salmonella cases lead to egg recall in NSW

AUSSIE egg eaters are being warned to avoid a specific brand after at least 23 people have been struck with food poisoning.

People are being warned to check their eggs very carefully after a horror outbreak of food poisoning has struck down at least 23 people.

Consumers in Sydney are being told to avoid Glendenning Farms eggs after several people people reported being hit with Salmonella enteritidis.

The NSW Food Authority is working with NSW Health to investigate the cases which occurred in a cluster and says the company, Eggz on the Run, is undertaking a voluntary recall of the eggs.

“The NSW Department of Primary Industries has issued a biosecurity direction on the farm to restrict movement of livestock, eggs, manure and disposables and order the disinfection and decontamination of equipment,” a NSW Health statement said.

“This direction will be in place while further investigations are underway.”

Do we truly understand the importance of food safety?

Outbreaks of food poisoning have resulted in product recalls, illnesses and even deaths. So are we educated enough about food poisoning and do we truly understand the importance of food safety?

Published by Nicola Murphy from (click here to read the full article) highlights that seriousness of food safety is made apparent by the number of foodborne outbreaks worldwide. 21 people became ill with Salmonella Havana linked to alfafa sprouts in South Australia, at least 183 South Africans have died after eating Listeria-contaminated polony and nine deaths have been caused by an outbreak of Listeria from frozen vegetables in Europe.

Research from the UK and New Zealand suggests there is still more to be done in educating people about the importance of food safety.


The Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) recent survey found that food poisoning was not the highest food safety concern (28%). Instead 33% of consumers were concerned about food hygiene when eating out, 30% about chemicals from the environment such as lead in food and 29% about food additives.

Results found that Salmonella and E. coli are the most known types of food poisoning, capturing the awareness of 91% and 85% of consumers respectively.

Respondents perceived raw chicken or turkey to be the most likely source of food poisoning (79%), followed by shellfish (55%), reheated takeaway food (46%) and eggs (37%).

Bacteria doesn’t change the appearance or smell of food, but there are a number of ways to reduce the risk of food poisoning. Consumers believed that the best way was cooking food thoroughly, but the survey found that awareness of hygiene standards when eating outside the home is 82%, which is a 4% decrease since May 2017. Just under half of respondents were concerned about food safety in UK restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, shops and supermarkets.

Whether the responsibility falls on the business or the consumer, these pieces of research highlight there is room for improvement in regard to upholding food safety and minimising the risk of illnesses.

Frozen Veg Food Safety Risk

Earlier this month Food Standards ANZ issued a recall for frozen vegetables which could be a food safety risk.

The frozen veg products could possibly be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Vulnerable people are at a greater food safety risk.  This includes pregnant women, people whose immune systems are compromised (e.g. cancer patients) and elderly people.

Consumers who have the product in their freezer should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it. Consumers who have eaten the product and feel unwell should see a health professional.
