Dozens of customers at a bakery in Melbourne’s inner suburbs have been diagnosed with salmonella poisoning.

Lincoln Bakery Cafe in Carlton has been closed since May 8 after a diner became ill.

A total of 36 cases of salmonella poisoning have now been linked to the eatery.  Currently there is an investigation including testing food samples and examining food handling practices at the bakery.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos told reporters on Saturday morning the bakery was closed.

“The Department is working very closely with the City of Melbourne to determine the source of the infection,” she said.

Those who have fallen ill are being interviewed to determine if there are common links.

Symptoms of the infection include stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, chills, throwing up and an upset stomach.

Anyone who ate at the cafe and have shown symptoms of salmonella poisoning are being encouraged to contact the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.
